Living Legend

Max Kampelman

Max Kampelman

Awarded: April 2000
(b. Nov. 7, 1920)

Max Kampelman was a counselor of the Department of State and ambassador and head of the U.S. delegation to the Negotiations on Nuclear and Space Arms in Geneva. He serves as vice chairman of the U.S. Institute of Peace, chairman of the American Academy of Diplomacy and chairman of Georgetown University’s Institute for the Study of Diplomacy. He founded and moderated the PBS public affairs program “Washington Week in Review” and was chairman of the Washington public broadcasting radio and television stations. He was awarded the Presidential Citizens’ Medal by President Ronald Reagan in 1989 after serving as ambassador and head of the U.S. delegations to the Conference on Security and Cooperation in Europe.
